It is importan that we understand that we use the “past continuous” to talk about activities that were in progress in the past. – Es importante que entendamos que utilizaemos el “pasado continuo” para hablar de actividades que estaban en progreso en el pasado.

There are different kind of sentences that we can write. Will be explained below. – Hay diferentes tipos de oraciones que podemos escribir. Se explican a continuación.

• Wh- questions. Wh- + was/were + person + verb -ing?
  • What were you doing? – ¿Qué estabas haciendo?
  • What was Max reading? - ¿Qué estaba leyendo Max?
  • What were they doing? - ¿Qué estaban haciendo ellos?
• Affirmative sentences. Person + was/were + verb -ing + complement
  • I was talking on the phone. – Yo estaba hablando por telefono
  • He was reading a newspaper. – El estaba leyendo el periódico.
  • They were playing tennis. – Ellos estaban jugando tenis.
• Negative sentences. Person + wasn’t/weren’t + verb -ing + complement
  • I wasn’t talking to Max. – Yo no estaba hablando con Max.
  • He wasn’t reading a book. – El no estaba leyendo un libro.
  • They weren’t playing soccer. – Ellos no estaban jugando futbol.
• Yes/No questions and short answers. Was/were + person + verb -ing + complement?
  • Were you talking to Max? Yes, I was. / No, I wasn’t
  • Was Max reading? Yes, he was. / No, he wasn’t
  • Were they playing tennis? Yes, they were. / No, they weren’t
